Taroudant is circled by walls; these ramparts give the city its charm and reputation and are a major tourist draw. But why not leave this precious stone setting? Why not venture into the outlying areas to explore a bit of untamed nature and climb up some of the towering peaks?
Surrounded by the mountains of the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas ranges, Taroudant serves as the starting point for many treks and hikes. If you love wide open spaces, you will feast on the sight of the sumptuous landscapes, where steep hills alternate with sunny valleys. You will scale mountain slopes and cross rivers and streams, uncovering a different side of Morocco in this remote backcountry.
From here, you can head toward some of the country's most beautiful scenery. Consider an excursion to the Tiout oasis 23 miles outside Taroudant, where a lush palm grove stands in striking contrast to the nearby desert. Around 4,000 people live here today, growing barley, wheat or carob. Come observe them and learn about their lives. Remember to look a bit further to the top of the hill, where an ancient kasbah still stands, ready to cap off your nature adventure with the perfect cultural flourish!
