It is said that Essaouira has some of Morocco's most talented craftsmen. Marquetry, weaving, argan oil, a multitude of products are at your disposal.
Walking through the Sqala in the old town, you will find marquetry and cabinet-maker's workshops installed in the old casemates. They primarily work with wood from the sandarac tree. It is then inlaid with mother of pearl, copper or silver wire or fragments of camel bone. Sandarac retains its sweet aroma for years. For purchase: jewellery boxes, furniture, checker boards and chess boards.
One of the specialities of Essaouira is weaving, especially wool covers. The workshops are located in the east part of the old town, in Chbanate street. Take your choice: ecru or coloured, plain or embroidered? Another star product: raffia slippers, which are very sought after by the summer visitors. For those with more elegant tastes, there are also slippers made from noble materials such as nubuck.
The speciality of the region of Essaouira is argan oil. The tree that produces the fruit from which the oil is extracted, the argan tree, does not grow anywhere else. For cooking, argan oil gives a light hazelnut flavour to your dishes. In cosmetics, the oil has proven anti-ageing and moisturizing properties. The production is managed by women's cooperatives. This oil contributes to improving the living conditions of women in rural areas.
Essaouira is a must-see destination. In addition to the site itself and its heritage, the town has some of Morocco's most beautiful and original craft productions.
