Marrakech International Film Festival

As president of this year's jury, legendary film director Martin Scorsese brings Hollywood fame and film buff passion to the Marrakech International Film Festival. The red carpet will be unrolled for a host of stars, including Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, Emmy award winner Patricia Clarkson, and some big names from Nordic cinema, invited as part of this year's special focus on Scandinavian film.

Under the theme "Northern Lights", the 2013 festival will pay tribute to the cinema of Scandinavia, with guests including Danish director Bille August. Since its beginnings, the Marrakech International Film Festival has regularly showcased Nordic films, with last year's Jury Prize and Best Actor Award going to the Danish movie A Hijacking by Tobias Lindholm. This year's theme thus strengthens the links between the Northern Lights of Scandinavia and the eternal warmth of Morocco.

Casting a critical eye on the programme, the international jury will be headed by Martin Scorsese, known for his long list of award-winning films including Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Gangs of New York and The Departed. Scorsese has strong links with Morocco, having filmed The Last Temptation of Christ and Kundun in the country. He also presented his film Aviator at the Marrakech festival in 2007. Scorsese will be accompanied on the jury by a team of international talents, including Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard and Moroccan director Narjiss Nejjar.

The festival will open on 29th November with the première of Ram-leela, the latest film from Devdas director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Billed as a modern-day version of Romeo and Juliette, it stars popular Indian actress Deepika Padukone, who will be present at the screening.
